GRANITE, QUARTZ and QUARTZITE
One of the most popular materials used for design and building, granite is a durable, 100% natural stone. It is taken from the ground in many countries, then cut and shaped to specifications. Granite is incredibly resistant to damage from scratching or even heat. However, you may need to get your countertops resealed every so often to allow for longevity.
Two more popular materials for countertops and interior design are quartz and quartzite. While granite is an attractive and durable material, quartz has more room for customization in appearance. Some homeowners love the look of granite, but others may need to match a specific color scheme. Quartz is also less natural of a material and requires engineering. As far as maintenance, quartz can still be dented and chipped with a knife. However, quartz countertops do not need to be resealed due to a fully solid surface.
While consumers and even some retailers present them as the same, quartz and quartzite are different materials. Quartzite is naturally occurring, and quartz countertops are actually engineered from quartzite. So if you’re looking for something more natural than quartz but not quite the same as granite, quartzite may be for you. Quartzite does require more maintenance, including regular re-sealing. Regardless, these three materials are very durable and have benefits of their own. It all comes down to what the homeowner is looking for in regards to appearance, maintenance, and natural qualities.
