About the Project

For fashion designer Rachel Roy, creativity has never been confined to the runway. At Rolling Hills, her personal residence in Austin, Texas, she brings the same appreciation for color, texture, and craftsmanship that defines her fashion collections to an entirely new canvas.

Originally a contemporary new build, the home has been transformed into a richly layered retreat inspired by Roy’s travels, personal collections, and affinity for old-world character. Rather than adhering to a singular aesthetic, she allows each room to tell its own story, creating a home that feels collected over generations rather than completed all at once.

Natural stone is central to that vision. From the dramatic movement of Avatar Granite to the understated elegance of Carrara marble, each material has been thoughtfully selected for its individual character. The result is a home where contrasting colors, patterns, and textures coexist beautifully, proving that a cohesive design need not rely on repetition.

Throughout Rolling Hills, a diverse collection of natural stones lends each room its own distinct identity. Dark Emperador Marble brings richness and architectural weight to the fireplace, while Monet Marble introduces painterly movement to the primary bathroom. In the powder bathroom, Cristallo Black adds another layer of visual drama.

Rather than repeating the same materials from room to room, Roy approaches each space as an individual composition, connected through a shared appreciation for craftsmanship, texture, and timeless beauty.

The effect is both eclectic and remarkably cohesive. Each stone contributes to the home’s evolving narrative, creating the sense of permanence and character often associated with residences that have been thoughtfully layered over decades.

A Beautiful Change of Pace

In the butler’s pantry, Poseidon Quartzite offers another expression of natural artistry. Its intricate veining and subtle variations in tone bring depth and movement to a space that might otherwise be considered purely functional.

The polished finish reveals the stone’s natural complexity, while a clean mitered edge provides a refined, tailored profile.
Like the other stones throughout Rolling Hills, Poseidon was selected not to repeat an existing palette, but to give the room a character of its own.

At Rolling Hills, that freedom to explore is what makes the home feel so personal. Through unexpected combinations and an appreciation for the beauty of natural materials, Roy has created a residence that feels less like a new beginning and more like a story that has been unfolding for generations.
